Psychology Jobs

For my major there are many different jobs available on this website. Many times with a Psychology major however you need to get further education as well. My plan is to get my Masters degree after I graduate in Guidance and Counseling and become a High School Guidance Counselor. I have also been wondering about developmental psychology though because I do love working with children. This way, I am still in the education type field but a higher level than just a teacher at an elementary or secondary education level.

Educational Equality

1. I feel that the statement is problematic because she is saynig that just because people are blind, then they are not  normal. I feel that she needs to start thinking that she is normal in order to not be thinking that way against herself. She needs to see herself as a normal person, yeah there might be a flaw with her but everybody has flaws.
2. I feel that Sally Frenchs tone is kind of angry, and negative. She is talking about how nobody will stick up for blind people and how not a lot is accessible for them. This may definitely be true but I still feel that she could be positive about it and maybe talk more about ways to fix it instead of just how bad it is.
3. There were different reasons that minorities would be more likely to be placed in special education classes. One was that most students that are immigrants do not know the language well enough and they do not have time to talk to them individually this way they put them in these classes where will have more one on one time, however they may be learning less than they actually know. Also, these students may come from poorer families and are behind in school so are placed in these classes even though they do not necesarily have disability.
4.With IDEA and ADA, they saw better ways to get involved in students lives who do have disabilties. With IDEA, they make up a clear schedule and ways to track the student make sure they arent falling behind and making sure they get the help they need; whether it be extra test time, certain technology, and many others. With these ideas, we are starting to work harder on this situation but it still will take time.

Sample CVs

I thought that these Cover Letters and Resumes were pretty good. I thought that the strengths of these would be is that they include all the information necessary. For the cover letters, they showed knowledge of the companies that they also included their strengths and why they would be good for these specific jobs. However, in the 2nd cover letter, I felt that she included a paragraph was not necesarily needed for this application. For the resumes, I feel that one weakness, I would say would be that the first one is too long. A resume should only be about a. page, it is a quick way for employers to get to know a candidate and they don't want to be reading a story about the person. Also the first one did not contain much about the activities the student was involved in or about his skills either. All in all, I think they would need some work and some are better than others but defintely a good start for people who havent made one before

Shitty First Drafts

Read: Shitty First Drafts and write a short blog response about your reflections on the article.  What intrigued you in her article? Write your next steps in revising your “shitty first drafts” of your social action research components.
I thought her article was really catchy and entertaining. She reeled you in and helped you understand that everyone has a bad first draft but thats the whole point of writing. To keep re-writing and fixing it and making it even better. I really need to dig into my drafts and see what all my peer reviews and teacher reviews have said and revise it to their likings but also re-read it and revise to what I think will make it better.

Discussion #4

According to Gregory Herek, what are the consequences of anti-gay prejudice ?
- the consequences of anti-gay prejudice would be having same-sex friendships. Men who have very strong attitudes towards homosexual males tend to not have friendships with them compared to males who are tolerant of it
How does Herek define “Secondary victimization”?
- Herek defined secondary victimization as increased discrimination when others learn about someone's sexual orientation as a consequence of victimization.
Burns find out that sexuality is not always a private matter. What did Burns find out about staying silent about one’s sexuality? Why is it necessary for some students to be open and vocal about who they are?
- He saw that a lot of students stayed quiet for multiple reasons; not to be made fun of, so their parents wouldn't know, so they wouldn't be treated differently. However, many other students wanted to stay true to they are, do as they please and let people know that they are proud of who they are.
Lim-Him discusses  two forms of oppression: racism and homophobia. What is the intersection of race and sexuality according to the author?

In class interviews

I interviewed Paige to learn about what her future academic plans are. With my interview, I found out that she is majoring in Nursing; she is not in the program right now, but hoping for the best. Right when she graduates, she has two plans. She would either like to take time to travel to show that she has that experience or she would like to get a job right away. Paige stated, "I would probably live at home and work nearby for the first few years," this way she would have an income coming in and then could then move out on her own. She really likes the pediatric area of nursing, but is afraid that it would make her sad to have to see children in pain or dying; she definitely knows that she does not want to work in the ER area. All in all, she is hoping that when she graduated she can find a nice job with benefits, close to home, good hours and everything else that would make it a pleasant working environment.

Methodology

Methods

Participants & Materials

My study included the interviews of ten women. These women were all undergraduated at Illinois State University, and ranged from the ages of 19-21. I asked each of these women to sit down and rate their feelings of self esteem on a scale of 1-5 from 1= very bad about myself to 5= very good about myself. They rated their feelings, then sat down to continue on to view a powerpoint of a few pictures. These pictures included sexy women in alcohol ads, and also atheltic type ads with women in sports bras with thin bodies. After they viewed these ads, they were then asked to rate themselves again.

Finding your own voice

I would define "voice" as the way I say and do things. Everything that I am saying is coming straight from my mind and soul and I really feel and believe in what I'm saying. I feel that this is discovered just by sitting down and writing a paper, or sending a text message or an email. When you sit down and write something, anything, you are using your own voice. I feel that Lamott means we need to overcome our fears and  just write to help us learn. By going through the door, we are unlocking new mysteries, new events, and something that will help us grow in our writing experience. I really like that quote, I feel as if it is a good way to get people to think to try new things and get their life started.

Asian's lesbian's Struggle

1. A visible minority is someone that right away we can see and already place them in a group. When we see an asian women, we already know that she is asian and place her in that group right away. An invisible minority is a little different; it is when someone is a minority but we may not be able to tell right away. It could be someone who looks mainly white, but maybe when they speak we undestand that they are not. Or maybe someone of a different sexual orientation, we can not tell that by looking at them but maybe when we get to know them we figure that out.
2. Sticking to your own kind means that you hang around/ are with people of your own race, gender, sexual orientation. It doesn't matter which "kind" you mean, but  just that you hang with those type of people and no others. Some people stick to their own kind because they feel comfortable with people like them, they believe they won't judge them and they will always befriend them. Also, sometimes people are left with no choice because people don't want to hang with them except their own kind, or their famiilies are against them hanging with other "kinds".
3. Her main struggle is her internalized racism, she is against her own culture and does not want to be iffiliated with anyone of her asian heritage. She overcomes it when she meets other people of her culture and other people who tell her how empowering it is to embrace their cultures.
4.This may sound bad, but I do not really feel that I need to tone down any aspect of my identity. I am an average white female living in a suburban area. I don't have much of an accent or anything to really take me out of the crowd.

Discussion #2

I feel that Paige and I did a very good job on our discussion. We worked hard and worked together as well. We split up the project, and each did an article and also worked together on the 2nd article. We each found a visual to help our project and we each thought of good question which we thought would really help our disucssion and help our class to speak up. I feel that this was a very strong discussion, and we pulled it off very well. I chose this discussion because it is very close to my SAP paper and I think that it is similar to what Paige is writing too.

"Adopting the Principle of Pro-feminism"

I feel that there are some things i do by perpetuating sexism. I feel that when me and my friends go out and get all dressed up, we are perpetuating sexism. We wear tight clothing, put on a lot of make up, and go out to impress boys or other people with how we look. Also, I feel that Halloween is a big holiday where girls perpetuate sexism. They go out in scandulous outfits that they think is okay to wear just because it's halloween, except these are very sexist outfits and showing off girls bodies. There are many more things just like this out there. I feel that we need to figure out a way to overcome these, however, I do not feel that this will happen until without time. Right now, we are at an age where we do not look at sexism as much as we should.
